There are two product lines in the Ping Hybrid Golf Clubs lineup. These are called the Rapture hybrids and the G5 hybrids. The Rapture is the newer of the lines, and as you will surmise from the discussion below, Ping club designers were working to obtain a center of gravity (CG) that is lower and farther back in the club face to make the ball easier to get up into the air.

Ping Hybrid Golf Clubs: Rapture Hybrid Golf Clubs

Three different materials are welded together to make the Rapture club head. The body of the head is made of 17-4 stainless steel. A tungsten nickel sole plate is welded onto the bottom of the club head adding weight to the sole and lowering the CG while also forcing the CG farther back from the club face. This is a design goal for every make of hybrid club and helps provide a higher launch angle. The face plate is made from what is called 475 super steel, and this is said to produce a “hot responsive hitting area”. The appearance of the Ping hybrids is pleasing with a sloped crown. This feature also helps to produce a CG that is low and back in the club face. The club head itself is fairly large and forgiving of off-center hits. The Rapture line offers 3 clubs, 2-4H. There is a good selection of standard graphite shafts, and of course steel shafts are also available. All 3 Rapture clubs are available for lefties. The MSRP for the Rapture is $225 with graphite and $195 with steel shafts. This club does not have a ladies version, but the G5 line, to be discussed next, does.

Ping Hybrid Golf Clubs: G5 Hybrid Gold Clubs

The G5 hybrids were the precursors of the Rapture line, and they look similar, since both sport the pleasing sloped crown look. The main difference in the two clubs is that the Rapture has the tungsten nickel sole plate and the G5 does not. Another difference is price. The MSRP for the G5 is $175 in graphite and $150 with steel shafts. The face plate of the G5 hybrid is machined from 455 stainless steel, which is used in most of the hybrids in the industry at this point. The club head is compact and a bit smaller than the Rapture. There are four versions of the G5, 2-5H. Once again there are a number of graphite standard shaft choices, and steel shafts can also be used. All the clubs are available in left-handed versions. For the ladies a 5H and 6H are available.

As is the case with most of the name brand club makers, Ping is recognizing the trend and the need for custom club fitting. There are so many hybrid golf clubs to choose from that one should invest $50-$150 or so in a custom club fitting session, preferably with a certified professional club maker who has all the needed equipment to provide a top notch fitting experience. After all, if you are going to purchase a new set of clubs, you can easily spend $1,500 or more, and you might as well have clubs that fit and will allow you to get the most out of your game. At the same time, many players (and maybe the wives of players) struggle with the skill and understanding, needed to master this game. It can become a passion that is testing to the impatient. Lets look at other, lesser-known uses for the Golf clubs:

The Home Security Device

The muscles used for swinging a golf club could be used to act as defense against home invasion, however keeping mind, that you may do more damage to your own belongings and yourself, rather than the intruder. Not recommended for those with fitted ceiling fans.

Imaging if you have children that have become board with the high tech video games. These are the same games that create a little moving, couch-based life. Give them a Golf club each and many over ripe oranges and you have a source of free entertainment. Ireland – Top 10 Links Golf Courses Reviewed by a Ordinary Golfer



Links golf is played on the natural terrain of seaside dunes and land banks and requires different playing techniques than when playing on the more common parkland course. Ireland has the highest ratio of links courses in the world per head of population, even more than the “home of golf” that is Scotland. Links golf introduces more of the element of chance into the game rather than the “target” golf you find on some manicured parkland courses. Even a slight breeze can utterly transform a links course from a benign creature to a monster.

Arguments will always abound as to the best golf course in any country or region and the matter is by nature subjective. Every year dozens of well known magazines that review golf courses to a broad range of criteria course publish their Top 100 or a Top 10 links and parkland courses in a particular country or region. They review links and parkland courses throughout the country but sometimes you wonder with what eyes are they are they looking at these courses.

Is their view that of the expert low single-figure handicap amateur or even the tour professional? Sometimes I would query the terms of reference that these reviews are based upon. I feel lack of consideration is given to what might make a great golf course from the point of view of players with handicaps from, say 10 to 24. An interesting statistic is that 95% of the world’s amateur golfers have a handicap of 15 or over and only 1% of the golfing population of the world have single-figure handicaps. Any professional golf course reviewer is by nature a fairly handy golfer and being so can perhaps make it difficult for them to view the course from the higher handicapper’s perspective. That is not to say that they don’t try – I have no doubt they do – but if you play of a handicap of 4, you don’t encounter the obstacles that a 20 handicapper will come across.

As a hacker playing off 12 with a love of links golf in particular, the following are my Top 10 Irish links courses. It may not necessarily agree with the glossy magazine reviewers but they reflect my own experiences and I think any golfer of any handicap low or high will find these fantastic courses. I did not rate courses I haven’t played which may explain some obvious omissions compared to a professional reviewer list. But here goes anyway, and let the arguments begin!

Tecina Golf Course Tenerife



Tecina Golf on the island of Gomera, a short ferry ride from Tenerife is a spectacular 18 hole championship golf course. The Tecina Golf Course is stunningly perched on the cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean and from every hole there are amazing views of the Ocean the Gomeran landscape and Mount Tiede in Tenerife.

Scottish golf architect Donald Steel designed this course, using his wealth of experience of designing courses through out Europe, and the setting for this course can not be talked about enough. The course is constructed in some of the most difficult terrain and all credit to everyone involved in this project.

The course is unique in the fact that you continue playing down hill towards the sea, so that all the greens face the sea and the Ocean is constantly in view, something that not many courses in the world can say. You start the round by taking your buggy or being driven 2 km uphill to the first tee and then slowly play back to the 18th where the club house is located.

Tenerife and the island of Gomera enjoy an average temperature of 23 degrees with very little variation through out the year. The rainfall is very low and humidity is kept low due to the coastal breezes (winds on some days).

Both Tenerife and the island of Gomera are fantastic places to visit for a golf holiday, or just a holiday with beautiful resorts and sandy beaches. Tenerife is naturally the busier island with an international airport and over six courses to choose from.

Gomera has one course, Tecina Golf Course, and the following are some is information on some of the beautiful and challenging holes, where to play and where to stay away from.

Hole 1 is a great starting hole and gives an indication of what this course is about. From the first tee of Tecina Golf the surrounding landscape and the Atlantic Ocean dominates the view with the golf course snaking downwards. The fairway is wide and undulating and you want to be positioned on the right hand side. The approach is over an off the green bunker with the left side of the green protected.

Hole 10 starts from a high tee and the hole plays downhill to a green that seems to be suspended in mad air. The fairway is split with barranco (rough rocky land) in front of the green making the clubbing for the approach shot important. Too long you are over the cliff!

Hole 11 is a par three played slightly uphill with the amazing green cut into the volcanic rock which is made more dramatic by being left exposed. The left side is protected by a bunker and the green is very undulating.

Hole 12 is a par 4 dog leg to the right and also has a sudden drop in its level making the correct length of tee shot important. This is another green with nothing but a sheer drop behind the green.

Hole 16 is stroke index one and is probably the toughest hole on the course. The hole plays long with a slight incline all the way. The left side is beautifully protected by a line of palm trees and there is a bunker to the right.

A round finishes at Tecina golf with more fantastic views with Mount Tiede on Tenerife and naturally a downhill hole. This is defiantly one of the most beautiful holes; the approach shot to the green is tricky with some palm trees in front and a bunker protecting the right.
Tecina Golf Course is a beautiful course which is enjoyable and challenging and offers spectacular scenery on every hole you play.
